Life After Bankruptcy

What Is Life Like After Bankruptcy?

One of the major concerns my clients have is that they will not be able to establish good credit or make any major purchases after filing for bankruptcy. There are adjustments to make after filing for bankruptcy, but fears about having credit that is "permanently" ruined are unfounded.

At the Law Office of David W. Cohen, I help individuals in and around Baltimore, Maryland, anticipate and prepare for the realities of life after bankruptcy. With 25 years of experience as a bankruptcy attorney, I have helped thousands of individuals get a fresh start and begin the process of restoring their lives and their credit.

First, The Good News

It is easy to get caught up in worry and fears about life after bankruptcy. You have probably been in a state of anxiety about your financial matters for some time, and it can be hard to shift your thinking. What you might not be anticipating is how relieved, calm and in control you will feel after a bankruptcy. You will come out of this in a much better position to meet your ongoing expenses, and your energy will be freed up to invest in the people and events that are important to you.

Second, Some Pretty Good News

Your credit will not be flawless after a bankruptcy, but it is not as bad as you might think. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, bankruptcy information can show up on your credit report for 10 years from the day you file, but that alone will not make you ineligible to get future credit.

Interest rates might be higher and credit limits might be lower, but the credit will generally be available if needed. Some creditors might even seek you out. Knowing that you cannot file for bankruptcy again for eight years, they are likely to view you as a better credit risk after your bankruptcy than you were before. You can acquire property after your bankruptcy; anything you purchase is yours to keep. You will even find that, after a period of a year or two, you will likely be able to qualify for a home loan on reasonable terms.

Take Back Control

Do not rule out bankruptcy as an option because you think it will blemish your future credit. Filing for bankruptcy can be a responsible way to take back control of your future and your finances.
